Florida weddings are beautiful for a reason. Between the beaches, gardens, oceanfront venues, and warm weather almost year-round, it’s easy to see why so many couples choose to get married outdoors here. But Florida weddings also come with challenges that many couples do not realize until the day actually arrives, especially if they are from out of town.
After photographing weddings throughout Central Florida and the Space Coast, I’ve seen what works really well and what tends to create discomfort to all involved. If you’re planning an outdoor Florida wedding, these are some of the biggest mistakes to avoid so your day feels cool, comfortable, and enjoyable from start to finish.

1. Not Hiring a Wedding Planner.
One of the best investments you can make for your wedding day is hiring a wedding planner or coordinator. A good planner does so much more than decorate tables or keep a schedule. They help create a smoother, less stressful experience for everyone involved.
Wedding planners manage logistics behind the scenes so you do not have to spend your wedding day answering vendor questions, tracking down family members, fixing timeline issues, or worrying about setup details. Instead, you actually get to be present and enjoy the day you spent months planning.
This becomes even more important for outdoor Florida weddings where weather, lighting, transportation, and timing can change quickly throughout the day. An experienced planner helps keep everything moving smoothly while also handling unexpected situations before they become larger problems.
As a photographer, having a planner present also allows me to focus on my job and not helping the bride and groom figure out where to go now that it’s raining. We can stay on schedule because someone else has already figured out a plan B and we can keep going.
Even if a full-service planner is not in the budget, having at least a day-of coordinator can make a huge difference in how your wedding day actually feels.

2. Scheduling the Ceremony Too Early
This is probably the biggest mistake couples make with outdoor weddings in Florida.
Midday lighting is extremely harsh, especially during spring and summer. Bright overhead sun creates heavy shadows under the eyes, causes people to squint, and makes the heat feel much more intense for everyone involved. Just imagine it, all your guests sitting in the hot sun in their best outfits. Beads of sweat rolling down and hoping the ceremony ends soon so they can get in the shade.
Solution
Schedule your ceremony about 2 hours before sunset or choose a shaded ceremony location whenever possible. For the best lighting and guest comfort, the sun should be behind the couple instead of directly facing them.
To help guests stay comfortable during outdoor Florida weddings, consider providing:
- sun parasols (great for bridal portraits as well)
- mini fans (especially for the elderly)
- water bottles (on ice)
If your ceremony needs to happen earlier in the day, choosing a cooler time of year can make the heat and bright sun much more manageable for everyone involved.

3. Not Having a Real Rain Backup Plan
Florida weather changes fast. Even during dry seasons, sudden rain showers are common.
A backup plan should not be:
- “hopefully it won’t rain”
- squeezing everyone under a tiny patio
- waiting until the last minute to decide
It’s important that the wedding venue that you choose has a back up option for rain. That can be a covered patio area, or a plan to set up a tent if there is any rain in the forecast. Event tents can be a whole aesthetic and prevents any fear of “what if’s” when it comes to Florida rain showers.
Personally, I got married in a tiny hallway because the skies decided to downpour during my ceremony time and only then. Talk about good luck, right? If I could do it over, I would choose a venue with a better back up option for sure.

4. Choosing Style Over Practicality
Some outdoor wedding ideas look beautiful online but become difficult in real Florida weather.
Examples include:
- candles melting in heat
- lightweight decor blowing over (especially if the venue is on the beach)
- heels sinking into grass or sand
- delicate florals wilting quickly (a good florist will let you know which florals won’t do well in the heat)
- dark suits overheating outdoors (We don’t want an uncomfortable groom)
You do not have to sacrifice style for practicality. You just want vendors and design choices that actually work well in outdoor conditions. That means keeping the black tie events during the cooler months of the year as well as making sure guests are aware if they should bring heels or sandals to your beach ceremony instead.

5. Underestimating Wind at Beach Weddings
Beach weddings are gorgeous, but wind changes everything.
Hair, veils, audio equipment, ceremony arches, and dresses are all affected by coastal wind conditions.
If you are planning a beach wedding, consider:
- secure hairstyles
- weighted decor
- stronger floral installations
- wind-resistant ceremony audio
- Not taking family photos on the beach (Where the wind is strongest)
This is especially important on the Space Coast where wind conditions can shift throughout the day.

6. Not Leaving Enough Time in the Timeline
Outdoor weddings often require more movement between spaces.
For example:
- ceremony lawn to cocktail hour
- portraits around the property
- sunset timing (varies at time of year)
- transportation between locations
- weather adjustments
When timelines are packed too tightly, couples often end up feeling rushed instead of present. And if one step along the timeline runs behind, everything else following is affected.
A little extra buffer time can completely change the pace and feeling of the wedding day. Always assume everything will take longer than you think. This way, you can’t go wrong!

7. Ignoring Sunset Times
Florida sunsets change significantly throughout the year.
This affects when the hottest hours of the day are from summertime versus wintertime. The best time for golden hour photos can either be at 4:30 pm or 7:30 pm! That big difference needs to be taken into consideration when planning your ceremony time as well.
One of the best things couples can do is plan their timeline around lighting instead of trying to fit portraits into whatever time is left over.
This is certainly something that I advise on during the planning process. A good wedding planner will also take this into account.

8. Hiring Vendors Who Are Not Experienced With Outdoor Weddings
Outdoor weddings require vendors who can adapt quickly. It can be tempting to hire a beginner who better fits your budget, but this can cost you later with their inexperience. You simply don’t know what you don’t know and it’s better to have someone who has been there and learned those lessons already.
Experienced outdoor wedding vendors usually know:
- backup options
- lighting adjustments
- weather timing
- efficient setup strategies
- how to keep the day moving smoothly under pressure
That experience matters a lot more than people realize. Make sure to ask about back up rain options when interviewing vendors before contracts are signed.

9. Forgetting About Florida Humidity
Humidity affects almost everything. Make up, hair, florals, candles and even your energy level!
This does not mean outdoor weddings are a bad idea. It just means planning before that ahead of time. Good makeup artists, hairstylists, planners, and florists already know how to work around these conditions successfully. Ensure you ask your vendors about this ahead of time. You wouldn’t want your curls to be gone before the ceremony even happens 😉

10. Spending Too Much Time Worrying About Perfection
This one is most important.
Outdoor weddings naturally have movement and unpredictability. Wind will blow. Weather can shift suddenly. Hair may lose its curl. Dresses get dirty. Clouds roll in.
And honestly, all these little details can change your day and in turn make it a unique experience you will love to look back on.
Some of the most beautiful wedding moments happen when couples stop trying to control every little detail and simply enjoy the people around them. So while I advise to take all the precautions you can and plan to the best of your ability, when your day is here, enjoy it to the fullest and do not sweat the small stuff. At that point, you have to trust in the vendors you hired and get back to the party.
