6 Photographer-Approved Tips for Planning the Perfect Proposal

Planning a surprise proposal is more than just asking a question—it’s about creating a memory that will last a lifetime. As your photographer, I’m here not only to capture the magic, but to help you create it. With my light, bright style and experience capturing emotional moments, I’ll help guide you every step of the way. Let’s make your proposal absolutely unforgettable.

1. Book a Couples or Family Session as a Ruse

One of the best ways to keep the surprise alive is to disguise your proposal as a casual photo session. Whether you plan it as a couple’s shoot or a full family session, this lets your partner show up fully styled and unsuspecting. I’ll guide the posing naturally—perhaps asking her to face the ocean or gaze off thoughtfully—while you get into position behind her, ready to drop to one knee.

2. Plan Your Spot in Advance

Location matters—immensely. Choose a meaningful or scenic place (beach at golden hour, anyone?), and let’s plan it together. Use Google Maps and send me screenshots of the exact spot. We’ll talk through the angles, lighting, and timing to make sure everything’s picture-perfect. Having a detailed plan in place helps avoid stress and ensures you feel confident when the moment comes.

3. Get the Right Angle for the Proposal

This one is big: when you’re proposing, make sure you’re either perpendicular to me or have her facing me. Your back should be to the camera, or turned slightly—because what we really want is her reaction. That joy, surprise, and pure emotion—that’s the magic. Trust me, you’ll treasure that photo forever.

The big question being asked!

4. Savor the Moment

After she says yes, take your time. Soak it in. Hug her, cry together, laugh—whatever feels right. Once you’ve had your moment, just give me a quick nod or signal that you’re ready, and we’ll continue with the rest of your engagement session. It’s a beautiful way to transition into more portraits while you’re both glowing with joy.

5. Make Sure Your Photographer Has a Telephoto Lens

For a true surprise proposal, discretion is everything. I always bring my 200mm lens, which allows me to keep my distance while still capturing every emotion clearly and intimately. It keeps the surprise intact without compromising the shot.

6. Bring Champagne and Glasses

Pop the bubbly! I love when my couples (Or I) bring a bottle of champagne and a couple of elegant glasses for a celebratory toast after the proposal. It adds such a romantic, joyful touch to your gallery—and makes for the most charming, timeless photos.

Let’s Make It Happen

Your proposal deserves to be captured with intention and care. If you’re ready to start planning this unforgettable moment, I’d be honored to help. From posing tricks to secret signals, I’ve got your back—so you can stay focused on the most important part: asking the love of your life to say “yes.”
